Travelling with smart glasses: live translation and Meta AI

In Switzerland, you move from one language to another within a few kilometres. So imagine a trip further afield: menus, signs, conversations… That is where smart glasses such as the Ray-Ban Meta Headliner (Gen 2) show a concrete use: helping you understand and be understood, without taking out your phone.

Live translation

Rolled out gradually by Meta, live translation lets you hear in your glasses the translation of what the other person is saying. According to the Coleman Opticians review, it supports English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish, which covers four languages that are very useful in Switzerland and Europe. Handy in a taxi, at a market or at a hotel reception.

Meta AI, your hands-free guide

The built-in camera lets the assistant “see” what you see. You can ask it what a monument is, have a sign or a menu translated, or get ideas for the rest of your day, simply by starting your sentence with “Hey Meta”. Some features do, however, depend on the country and language.

Your memories, without lifting your phone

Gen 2 films clips of up to 3 minutes in 3K Ultra HD: ideal for keeping a walk, a concert or a view just as you experienced it. With up to 8 hours of quoted battery life and a charging case, it lasts a day's excursion.

Our travel tips

• Download in advance whatever you can and check your data plan abroad: the assistant works through your smartphone.
• Respect local rules: in some places (museums, places of worship), filming is prohibited.
• Ask before filming the people you meet.
