AI glasses: what artificial intelligence really changes in your glasses

People now talk about AI glasses, lunettes IA in French or KI-Brille in German. Artificial intelligence has become the heart of smart glasses. But what does it really do once the glasses are on your nose?
An assistant you control by voice
On Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta, you just say “Hey Meta” to talk to Meta AI. There is no screen to look at: the answer arrives in your ears, through the open-ear speakers in the temples.
Five concrete uses of AI
1. Understanding what you see
Thanks to the camera, the AI can describe what you are looking at: a monument, a plant, a work of art, a dish. That is the big difference from a simple voice assistant on a phone.
2. Translating live
Live translation lets you follow a conversation in another language, the equivalent of an interpreter in your ear. Very useful when travelling: see Travelling with smart glasses.
3. Reading and summarising
A sign, a menu, a poster: the AI can read the text, translate it or summarise it.
4. Remembering
Ask your glasses to remember where you parked the car or to remind you of a task later.
5. Keeping your hands free
Sending a message, calling, starting music or taking a photo without touching your phone: on a bike, in the kitchen, with a child in your arms.
AI with a camera, AI with a display, audio AI
- AI with a camera (Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta): the most versatile, because it sees what you see.
- AI with a display and no camera (Even G2, MemoMind One): it shows its answers in the lens, useful for subtitle translation or meetings, but it cannot see.
- Audio AI (Ray-Ban Meta Audio Clubmaster, Xiaomi Mijia): the voice assistant and music, without a camera.
The limits to be aware of
- A connection is required: the AI works through your smartphone and the internet.
- Features vary by country and language: not all are available everywhere at the same time.
- The AI can get things wrong: as on a phone, it is best to check important information.
- Privacy: find out about the data-sharing settings in the app.
Where to start?
To discover AI glasses, a pair with a camera such as the Ray-Ban Meta Headliner (Gen 2) offers the most complete experience. To compare, read Smart glasses with a camera and Smart glasses with a display.
